Bizarre Love Triangle

I feel a million memories when I reflect upon my childhood and curiosity towards my mother's jewelry box. It was tucked away carefully in her closet, second shelf in the center. Perfect level for my height to just about reach. She was always and still is open to share anything with me, but there was one rule; put the little gems back where they belonged at the end of the day. I was still too young to own and really care for pieces of gold and jewels. But every time my hands had a hold of the little bronze hexagon box, I felt an instant joy. The stained glass, floral design - almost reminiscent of a church window, was existent all around the item which contained everything I loved. Inside there were brooches, rings, bracelets, necklaces, and earrings. One in particular that I could not resist. I delicate, thin gold pair of triangle earrings. So basic, yet so beautiful.

Inspiration hit! And I wanted to find the triangle in everything. Geometric shapes always scream eclectic and interesting to me whether they are existent in accessories and clothing, to skyscrapers and furniture. Looking over the 2013 Pre-Fall Accessories, triangles seemed to have exploded across pointy toe shoes to sharp studded necklaces, they certainly make a point.

Great-er Than Costume Jewelry

The literary classic American novel The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, in which I read in high school brought about much hype when it was announced as a movie in the making. Growing up in Long Island, aka. "the West Egg" in Gatsby words, I found the story to be a compelling read. The constant love affairs made incredible cliff hangers, it was hard to put the book down. The plot was based upon the era of the 20's - 1922 to be exact. During this roaring time period, I only imagined what their wardrobe composed of - and Gatsby's closet! Director Baz Luhrmann's wife, Catherine Martin, who has been his creative partner for a while now, took on the role as the movie's costume designer. So what does she have in store for dressing the characters of the Jazz Age? One thing's for sure, the stars will really shine on the big screen with jewels made in collaboration with Tiffany & Co, creating pieces such as a collection of platinum-set diamonds and pearls. It was a natural move, as the iconic American brand fits perfectly with the theme of the story; classic and beautiful. Much better than ordinary costume jewelry? I think so. The Great Gatsby will be released in 3D and in theatres on May 10th this year.

The Quintessential Theory

Among the collections that show for a new season, I'm always excited to see what Olivier Theyskens creates next. The Pre-Fall 2013 collection of Theysken's Theory that showed last month included thirty-three pieces infused with that dark, grungy, yet structured design aesthetic that maintains true to the New York label. The looks stirr up my inner want, need and have to have it as the pieces are very much wearable. Separates touch base on just about every category; tanks, short to long sleeved tops and blouses, jumpers, structured blazers, jackets, dresses, skirts, leather pants, shorts. and a few denim pieces thrown in the mix. Solids, subtle prints, and a few muted pops of color keep the interest. Fresh kicks, wedges, and leather boots encountered together nicely. Great for throwing on these ready-to-wear pieces and going downtown. They can be worn in transition from work to dinner easily, and that's what we all need, right? Pre-fall perfection.
